THE PROCESS OF CREATING MY DIGITAL TEACHER IDENTITY

HELLO! I mentioned my discussions. Presence, Student Engagement, Flipped Learning, and Distance Learning. Now, I want to mention the contribution to my digital teacher identity of this process.

First things first, this process has given me a lot. We continued by making a plan for ourselves with my discussion friend Fulya. From the first week, we prepared a ppt every week and we wrote a sentence on the first page. Before we wrote these sentences with Fulya, we saw many sentences to motivate us. And when we read every sentence, we became more motivated. Therefore, it was a relief for us to read these sentences before we started the discussion. I believe that teacher identity is something that occurs after having a certain experience. Unfortunately, our digital teacher identity was not completely formed. Apart from our online courses and practicum, another creator of our digital teacher identity is these discussions. Completing our weekly discussions online made them more formal. Fulya and I took this very seriously and accepted that it was a big responsibility. We uploaded our videos on time every week. That’s why collaboration, responsibility and motivation are my keywords in creating my digital identity. Without this process, my digital teacher identity would be incomplete. I understood the importance of cooperation better. In order to comment on some articles, I had to fully understand them. But when I couldn’t understand, my friend Fulya was able to help me even if we were in online environment. Many more comments, ideas, and perspectives could emerge as we talked together. That’s why I actually understood the importance of pair work very well. I will definitely prove this to my students. As a matter of fact the sentences we wrote are literally affected and impressed us. When I become a digital teacher, I would definitely like to introduce my students to these special sentences. I saw that the reflection of motivation. Truly, students need the motivation a lot. I also said that we made ppt with Fulya and added sentences. So, I can say that we created our own style of discussion. Even in the digital environment, I think a teacher should be different and try something different and creative. Because there are many different students in the classrooms. And every student in class is waiting to learn. No matter how many different things we use, it will be to our advantage. In other words, I can say that my digital teacher identity has improved a lot in terms of differentiation. Because, thanks to the articles my teacher gave, we had the opportunity to get to know many different applications. Besides, we learned many different perspectives and theoretical knowledge. In terms of knowledge, I can say that my digital teacher identity is gradually developing. With Blended learning, which is the first topic of our 7th-8th weeks, we have discussed both face-to-face education and online education. We discussed exactly how Blended Learning should be. In the 8th week, we talked how should feedback be given in writing? Every time I talked to Fulya, we produced different ideas and perspectives. I also listened to her opinion, we tried to find the best for the future. We have shown how much the feedback we received at the university has on us. We were happy with the comments of our Cemil hoca on our videos, we got our motivation and said that we can do better. Another thing that contributed to my digital teacher identity was the idea of doing better. We evaluated written theories for Listening, Speaking, Writing, and Reading. We had the opportunity to get to know more digital applications. This issue was more important for us because these are the 4 basic areas of English. Of course, they were also very important as other issues were about how we would create these spaces. Another issue that I considered important was the examples I gave from my own life. During the discussions, I constantly gave examples from my own high school and middle school teachers. As a consequence, this has directed me to compare the learning techniques I have seen with the techniques of how teaching should be. Every memory that comes to my mind about my teachers has made me realize what I will or will never do in the future. I was able to categorize my teachers once again. I understood very well the difference between my teacher who used technology to listen to classical music in middle school and my teacher who did not even answer the questions we asked in high school. During this process, I thought a lot about my past and tried to create my own digital teacher identity. I was hesitate to choose between the many different ideas I’ve thought of and the good or bad behavior I’ve seen. The articles given by our Kenan Hoca have been a guide for me. I think we’ve definitely done some preliminary work in the digital teaching environment. We talked about how everything should be and tried to find the right one. As I said, this process was a huge responsibility for us. You had to read the article or you wouldn’t have anything to talk about. That’s why we tried to understand even more so that we can comment. I improved my ability to comment. I also had the opportunity to use the blog I opened 2 years ago more actively. I have included different applications in my blog. And it was an honor for me to show them. I was able to connect my own work to technology and teaching. I will use my blog more because this is one of the things that benefit my digital teacher identity. When I become a digital teacher, I aim to create my own style and use many creative and different things to guide my students. I’m sure this process will reflect on my behavior as well. Because, in other words, it’s a team effort. It is a work done by waiting for my friend’s suitable time. It’s a work that requires respect and patience. All these features that I have learned are the features that currently exist in my digital teacher identity. This process has given me a lot. I am sure that I will watch these discussion videos even in the future and once again understand how I should behave. I think I left a very good work for myself and my students. As I am proud of my blog, I deeply believe that I will be proud of these videos in the future. I gained a lot in this process. I can’t wait to apply all my techniques I gain.

I am very lucky that the discussion process coincided with my practicum. Since this process prepared me to be a digital teacher, I can say that it made my job easier during my practicum. As I said, every teacher has their own style and teaching technique. When I learned this in the discussion videos, I started to get used to the style of my practicum teacher. To tell the truth, there were behaviors that I would take as an example and not follow. I was able to evaluate the behaviors of my practicum teacher. For example, I can say that the teacher should provide more speaking activities. Or I can say that I really like the way she talk in class and that it impresses the students and makes them more motivated. The practicum experience was a guide for me to develop in terms of teaching. But these online discussion videos helped me a lot more. Maybe I was able to criticize my teacher in a professional way. I observed my cooperating teacher about the language she used in the classroom, her activities, the time she used the lesson and the way she behaviored students. Because I learned these from discussion videos. I took notes to make these techniques better in the future. Of course, these techniques were reflected in our discussion videos. We had a convenience sampling. It was more informative and highlighting for us to comment on these examples and link the subject to the articles. Of course, these discussion videos were reflected in our digital teacher identity, not only in terms of observing the teacher, but also while teaching during the practicum. I started to apply everything I discussed while teaching during my practicum. For instance, I even gave feedback to the students’ answers and tried to show them the correct word or topic by repeating it. Then, I opened different applications on my blog and they were very impressed and found very creative. Normally, our lesson plan is pre-prepared and clear before our lesson. But I was so impressed with the discussion videos that I was trying to teach some things to the students even in the limited time in the lesson. While doing my practicum, I had the opportunity to practice the things I discussed with my friend Fulya. I had a class that would implement and wondered. I want to share something else. Actually, my turning point was my mother and father. My parents are teachers. And since this online education started, they have been trying something even though they don’t understand much because of their age. I also taught them about the information I learned from these articles. Sometimes we were listening to our discussion videos together and I was translating them into Turkish. My mother and father have improved their digital teacher identities thanks to me. I introduced them to many different applications and I told them they could show the apps, videos and many different things. We discussed the information and theories in the articles. I also gave examples from my father’s class in our discussion videos. In fact, that example was related to the flute. Since my father is a classroom teacher, he also attends music lessons. He said that he had a hard time teaching the flute in music class and that he could not understand the online system. But I have shown that there are very good applications that teach flute playing. So he wouldn’t have to just stand in front of the camera and show it himself. With many different and creative applications, his students would gain different perspectives. After showing this, he actually said how much of an impact being a digital teacher would have on students. In addition, he observed that even the quietest students in the class had a lot of fun and wanted to attend the lesson thanks to a lot of educational games. In fact, the sentence in our discussion in Week 11 and 12 is relevant to this issue. “Technology gives the quietest student a voice.” I affected by my father’s student. I wanted to show her voice. Hopefully, I helped and conducted that student. This was a very important and unforgettable process for me. Plus, my mother’s students were not attending classes. But with different applications and games that my mother offered in the lesson, more students started to attend the class. I provided this situation. I was able to discuss my ideas and feelings with others. In my practicum, I was applying what I learned and also teaching these to two people. After the discussion videos, I helped my family to gain a digital teacher identity thanks to the things I applied in my practicum. According to this, I also advanced my own digital teacher identity with their stories. I liken the situation to this; If there were no discussion videos, the lab where I would experiment without a formula would be in vain. Therefore, I had the opportunity to qualify myself in many areas, I saw more real-life examples, I taught lessons with a digital teacher identity, and most importantly, I found two students that I could teach all these things I learned. As my digital identity was filled with more information, I helped my parents get a new one. I can say that this whole valuable process shaped me very well for the teaching profession. I deeply believe that I learned all the techniques that I paid attention to, liked very much and thought would definitely make a difference when used. Thanks to the motivation I gained in this process, I think that I can provide a very different English education to my students with a new style. For all these reasons, this is how I used my practicum while the discussion videos were guiding me. As our weekly videos progressed, I was refreshed and moved on to equip myself with knowledge. I appreciated the whole process and all my acquisition.

Firstly, it can be prepared interactive exercise with Hot Potatoes. Preparing exercise is very simple  and it can be prepared so many exercises in different types. Another thing is that Hot Patatoes is free. Hot Potatoes is a diverse app because there are many activities. Especially, when students are learning a second language, they want to keep in mind so,  they give importance to various exercises. Besides all of this, I found Hot Potatoes a little plain. In my opinion, students can see so many exercise but they don’t fun too much.

PIXTON!

WHAT IS PIXTON?

Pixton is a platform where you can create your own comic book.

According to me, Pixton is a different tool. Children don’t know comic books to much. Because of technology. So, they can see and create their own comic books through technology. Teachers can use Pixton in the end of the lesson as activity. I think, students love it. In my opinion, this application is benefit in terms of foreing language. Students can use the second language as a their own story. In addition to, their levels will increase and they will learn faster.

You can read my beginner story about theft. 🙂https://www.pixton.com/tr/create/storyboard/r9x55lrl

PADLET!

PADLET ile ilgili görsel sonucu

WHAT IS PADLET?

It is a digital panel where you can add images, videos, articles you want or imagine.

I really like this digital panel. When teachers are teaching the subject, they can create a padlet and show to their students in the classroom. Another good characteristic is padlet application is free. In my opinion, Padlet isn’t boring application. Thanks to pictures. Teachers can offer a long topic to their students by making them shorter and supporting them with pictures. It brings permanence. I think, the most important part is that students can create their own padlet with their classmates and it brings co-operative. Thus, they can learn responsibility.

Guys, here is my padlet that i created. I hope you like it. 🙂 https://padlet.com/yagmurerdem9/9fqh5grdk0b4

VOKI!

voki ile ilgili görsel sonucu

WHAT IS VOKI?

Voki is an application that allows you to create characters online and use these characters to voice your typed text.

The characters you create with Voki are capable of vocalizing texts written in many languages. In addition, in all languages, with the difference between men and women, with the different accents of the language is also offered. The Voki characters are not only the voice of the text but they also have the ability to voice your voice recording and also to record the sounds you recorded on your computer. In this respect, Voki is an useful application especially for foreign language. I think, the most important problem is speaking in language classes. Students are often afraid of making mistakes or embarrassment because they are not able to produce what they learned. However, this type of students can read a text on their own voices through Voki to another character. Thus, the pressure and fear on them will be reduced to less. In addition, creativity levels of students will increase because they choose their own avatars and build their own sentences. Of course, it brings fun. I love Voki app so much. I will definitely use it in my classroom. Thanks to Voki, I will increase my students’ attention to the lesson.

You can learn ‘how to create and publish your voki’ from this link. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FunBew6S4Bk

WORDLE!

WHAT IS WORDLE?

The word cloud (wordle) is a picture of words that are related to a particular subject and come together in different sizes.

In my opinion, wordle seems like fun. Although wordle looks like a whole from a distance, it actually consists of pieces. The best part of wordle is to be available for each lesson and each subject. In this way wordle is multidirectional. Thanks to the word cloud, students keep the terms they learn better in their minds. When wordle is used in the classroom, students constantly see those words and repeat them without being aware of them. This will increase the level of permanence of students. Especially, before exams, students can use wordle effectively.

I used ‘Word Art’ application and i had fun. Here is my word cloud! 🙂
